What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells made of tooth coloured porcelain that are custom made and bonded to your teeth to improve their appearance (changing the colour, shape, size or length). Porcelain veneers are usually made in the lab and are more resistant to staining. At Smile Artists we only use the highest quality Porcelain Veneers, which have the best strength and shine of all veneer materials.

Quick and simple treatment

After your consultation, your dentist will take a mould of your teeth and send it to the laboratory to create custom-made veneers to your exact size, specifications and colour preferences. Once ready, your dentist will fit them to your teeth. The whole process is quick and easy and doesn’t require any anaesthesia.

Do my teeth need to be drilled down to have veneers?

Most patients fear having to have there teeth drilled down into small stumps. This is a myth and when veneers are done properly the amount of tooth reduction is very minimal or sometimes none at all.

Does it hurt?

Not at all. As the preparation is generally very minimal sometimes no anesthetic is required at all. If some preparation of the teeth is required then small volumes of local anesthetic may be used.

How will I know what they will look like?

The reason we have so much success is down to our planning. We will always have a wax diagnostic set up made of the teeth which we term a trial smile. This wax version of your new smile will be made before we begin any preparation of the teeth so that you have the opportunity to see your new smile before we begin treatment.

How will I know what colour to choose?

For all of our cosmetic cases we will always have the involvement of our head ceramist to ensure that the colour is discussed in detail prior to beginning. Whitening your teeth prior can allow for you to reach a shade that you are happy with prior to selecting the final shade of the porcelain for the veneers. This ensures the final result will be the best possible.

Alternatively if we are performing a full smile makeover including the upper and lower teeth and shade can be selected. This is where the brightest white shades can be achieved to give you a celebrity smile.

How do I clean my natural tooth underneath the veneer?

Veneers function as normal teeth and hence they need to be treated with care. You will still need to maintain an excellent cleaning regime at home as well as visitng our therapists to allow for professional cleaning.

There are a wide variety of reasons why patients opt for treatment with dental veneers.

Stained teeth

Badly stained teeth that cannot be improved by teeth whitening or prophyflex treatments can be greatly improved by dental veneers, which functions to cover any existing stains on your teeth.

Damaged teeth

Teeth that have become badly worn through excessive grinding or by carbonated drinks, as well as those that have been chipped or broken, can benefit from veneers. A small chip on a tooth can quickly be repaired with composite bonding, also known as “Composite Veneers”. A single damaged tooth can easily be repaired with a porcelain veneer that has the same characteristics and colour as your natural teeth.

Spaces or gaps (diastemas) between your teeth can be closed easily using dental veneers, giving you a more uniform looking smile.

Crooked teeth

Veneers are not the ideal treatment for crooked teeth and from the point of view of preserving your natural teeth structure, orthodontics or Invisalign braces would probably be a better solution. However, such treatments can take up to a year or longer. For teeth that are not severely crooked, veneers placed over their front surface will give a straight and perfectly aligned looking smile.
